38 Weeks and soon to be a mom!!

Today we had our 38 week scan and it was quite an exciting appointment for us. For quite a few months the doctor has been worried about the size of my pelvis in comparison to the size of baby's head so today was the day we got to find out if baby was going to come of his own accord or if we were going to have a c-section.

We arrived at the gynae's offices and I was taken through to do the heartbeat monitoring again like we did last time. All seemed fine. Baby was awake this time around so the heart rate was up and down the whole time whilst he was kicking and wriggling around. Then in to see the doc.
He did his usual scan and measured baby's weight which is now in the region of 3.1kg so a really good size. Then he measured baby's head and that was approximately 9.5cm in diameter which is average size for a baby at full term. So baby is doing well and is all healthy.

So what did all of that mean for me, well it meant that natural birth was becoming less of an option.
The gynae then measured my pelvis. Apparently the space he measured is suppose to be able to accommodate at least 2 finger widths of space however mine is almost half of that. Thus meaning that baby might have a difficult time getting out.

I had 2 options. One I could wait to go into labour and see if the space opened up sufficiently for baby. This sounds good, however if all does not go well and the pelvis really is too small then that would mean an emergency c-section which could pose more risks and complications than an elective c-section.
Option 2 was to have a planned c-section which still carry's certain risks but would be far less risky than an emergency c-section.
After much discussion and weighing up the pro's and con's a planned c-section was decided.

Now came the exciting news. I am booked in for Monday 3 August 2009. So now we only have 6 days left til we get to meet our little guy. We are so excited but I am also a little nervous. It is all a little surreal and my brain is getting sore from all the thinking and all the emotions :-) It is definitely going to be a life changing day but in a positive way.
